Chapter Seven

Warnings manifested themselves in many ways. Say, for instance, they could take the form of a sixth sense of awareness that redirected a person from walking down a specific street to avert disaster.

Ashlei awoke with a similar tickling in the recesses of her mind, and although she wanted nothing better than to ignore the bright light filtering in her childhood bedroom and pretend morning hadn’t come so quickly, she couldn’t. Especially once her mind began to fuse together what had pulled her from the tired slumber. She lay staring into her closed eyelids. It was quiet. Too quiet, in fact, for the Preen household, which was most unsettling. For cripes’ sake, she could hear the birds chirping outside instead of her sister’s version of music blaring from the obnoxiously loud speakers she had in her room, or her father’s threat to do physical harm to said objects. Neither could she hear her mother slamming from room to room collecting laundry as was her Sunday morning ritual—God forbid she did it quietly. Funny how the sounds that once annoyed and made her eager to leave the nest also brought her comfort. Something was definitely amiss.

On a sigh Ashlei pushed her way out of the tangle of the thin bedsheet and rolled off the comfort of her bed. Using the private bath attached to her room, she made quick work of freshening up. Minutes later she still looked like a person in need of a couple of hours’ rest. Puffy eyes reflected at her from the over-the-sink mirror even after she’d cleaned the sleep from them. Her unflattering appearance left her debating whether to fix her lopsided ponytail or to change out of the worn, oversize Bulls T-shirt she’d worn as pajamas. Neither idea held much appeal, especially since she planned on burying herself right back in the bed after she made a quick sweep of the house. There would be no Sunday morning run today.

Stepping into the hall confirmed her earlier assessment. Something was off, although she was glad to smell the fresh scent of coffee and what seemed to be the makings of breakfast. Hopeful, she quickened her pace.

“Mom, what’s going on? Did you guys finally take my advice and sell Reigna to a band of gypsies?”

Instead of her mother’s admonishing tone, the sharp expletive she heard in reply had her stopping in her tracks. It wasn’t so much that she’d never heard a curse word uttered in her parents’ home; it was the fact that she’d never heard one from that particular male voice in her parents’ home before.

Seth found her standing on the cusp of the dining room, looking bedraggled in a faded basketball jersey and thick, mismatched socks that were a little uneven. She looked ravishing. So much so to him that he could feel a stirring in his loins. It was a happenstance that he was accustomed to whenever she was near, although today the sensation chose not to hide behind the propriety of lengthy exposure to her.
